WE DO NOT ACCEPT SUBMISSIONS BY EMAIL!

Sorry for being so blunt about it, but too many people have either ignored or overlooked this important fact.

Why do we have this policy? First, it makes things easier by sparing us the trouble of printing each copy out, so that we can share submissions among our staff, write down comments as we read, etc... Second, it also makes the submission process less impulsive from a writer's standpoint; rather than simply shooting off another email to another publisher, a writer will need to take some time and care with their submission and include the completed submission release form.

AISLING EYE BOOKS welcomes the opportunity to review writers' works in its continuing search for challenging, rewarding material from unique and varied creative voices.

We are currently looking for SHORT STORY submissions for an upcoming hardcover anthology! See below for more information.

AISLING EYE BOOKS is proud to announce a new series of collected short stories and essays from a diverse group of published and debut writers!

The first volume will feature work of an offbeat, satirical and eccentric nature, similar to the style of humorous writing found within McSweeney's and The New Yorker. The company is currently seeking SHORT STORY SUBMISSIONS for inclusion in this collection, tentatively titled Through an Aisling Eye: Collected Tales.

No fee is required for submission. All interested writers are strongly encouraged to register their work and review all company policies beforehand.

  • We recommend sending no more than 2 submissions at a time.
  • Short stories should be in English, and run no more than 10,000 words each.
  • Cartoons and comic strips are also welcome, but artists should keep in mind that all images will be reproduced in black and white, and printed on 6" x 9" pages.
  • Poetry and pornography will not be accepted.
  • DEADLINE EXTENDED!!! Submissions must be received by October 1st, 2008.
  • WE DO NOT ACCEPT SUBMISSIONS BY EMAIL!

A completed submission release form is required before we can review any material. You may download the form here:
Submission Release Form (PDF)

Writers and artists selected for publication may maintain copyright ownership of their work, while granting Aisling Eye Books the non-exclusive publication rights for this collected volume. The publishing contract is available for review here:
Non-Exclusive Publishing Contract (PDF).

DO NOT SEND THE PUBLISHING CONTRACT WITH YOUR SUBMISSION! This contract is here so that writers may openly know what to expect beforehand, and is only required should their work be chosen for publication. Writers are not bound to it as a condition of simply submitting their work for review.

GENERAL SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Interested writers must mail a completed Submission Release Form with their work in order for us to review it. Any work submitted without this form will not be read, and will either be immediately returned or destroyed. (We are not responsible for returning any submissions.)

No fee is required, but all writers are strongly encouraged to register their work either with the Writers Guild of America or the U.S. Copyright Office prior to submission. Please include a self-addressed stamped envelope if you'd like a written confirmation that your submission was received.

Submissions must be written in English. and should be emailed mailed to:

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

First, let's start out by saying what we're not looking for:

  • Overtly religious books. (It's not that we hold grudges against God. We're just probably not the best venue for His kind of material.)
  • Erotica and pornography. (We hold no grudges against porn, either...but after that first point, we don't want to offend God any more than we already have.)
  • Self-help books or instruction manuals. (May we refer you to Dr. Phil or Bob Villa?)
  • Poetry.
  • Children's picture books.
  • Most importantly, we are not interested in reviewing "pitches" or unfinished manuscripts. We want something that's fairly polished -- that means proper grammar, spelling, and vocabulary. Sure, we'll likely make some minor editing changes or corrections here and there, and go through it with a copy editor, but we need a strong, refined starting point from you to begin with.

Now let's talk about what we are looking for:

Great material. Seriously.

Be it fiction, memoir, biography -- we're pretty open to anything and everything, provided that it's absolutely fascinating. Mystery, crime novels, historical fiction, science fiction/fantasy, gay & lesbian fiction, westerns, horror/suspense -- all are welcome.

Just remember, we're new at this, and haven't really developed a niche market yet. With this in mind, if you're expecting a mass-marketing strategy entailing tens of thousands of copies in circulation, well…it sounds like a nice dream to us, too.

Our thinking is geared towards offbeat, counterculture, unusual or unique stories that would presumably have a difficult time fitting into the mass market... Stuff that starts out small, but grows through positive word-of-mouth... Should we come across material that we like, we'll be upfront and honest with our authors about how best to approach their material. It's a two-way street; not only does your work have to be right for us, but we have to be right for you.
